I'm a lover of all kinds of music and knew from an early age that I had a passion for it. As a kid, my parents would always play a lot of Reggae, Soca, and Calypso. It was around the age of 9, maybe 10, that I started getting into Soul music.
I started DJing at 17 on a cheap pair of belt drives and a small Tandy's mixer for a few years until I got my first Technics 1200s. After that, I started a sound system with some friends. The sound system didn’t last long but, by then, I was already into Electro, Hip Hop, breakdancing, and was deep into scratching and mixing.
I remember seeing someone on TV talking about music production, and I was hooked. The next day, I went out and bought my first sampler, an Akai S900, and then an Atari ST with the first version of Cubase. From then on, the rest is history.
A friend introduced me to MC Duke, who was looking for a DJ. He was already signed to Music of Life Records, and we started making music together, which led to me being signed to Music of Life as well. We did a lot of touring around the UK and abroad, supporting various artists, including Derek B, The Demon Boys, Cookie Crew, Salt-N-Pepa, Sinéad O'Connor, and Queen Latifah.
I have released music on Music of Life, Ruff Quality Recordings (an off-shoot of Shut Up and Dance), Boogie Times Records, Tone Def Records, and Hard Disc Records all under various names. Along with a friend, we went on to set up our own labels called One Touch Records and Audio Dimensions Recordings, where we released Hardcore Breakbeat, Jungle, and DnB for ourselves and other artists. We also produced and released an Asian fusion album on a label named Hoo Ha Records, which allowed me to scratch something off my bucket list by performing at Glastonbury for the BBC.
Family life then took over, and everything was put on the back burner. But I still DJd in my man cave, though not very often. A few years later, with the kids grown, I was asked to DJ at a party, and I was off and running again.
From there, I started doing mobile work, which eventually led to my first online radio show over two years ago. I'm now Iooking forward to working on Soul City Radio.
In the early days, I could regularly be found dancing in the underground Jazz Funk and soul clubs of the late 70’s early 80’s ,including Crackers, Horseshoe, Royalty and The Electric Ballroom.
I then went on to DJ at Flicks, Dartford (1986-1989), Champs Deptford and also Fantasy Radio. The attraction of pirate radio was outweighed by the prospect of large fines, confiscation of records, so I decided to follow other avenues into broadcasting.
I worked at Jazz FM (London) for nearly 4 years, presenting several shows and becoming studio manager, assisting Greg Edwards. Robbie Vincent, Jeff Young and Paul Jones. In 1998, I then went on to join BBC Television as Presentation Operator & Transmission Controller, part of a team responsible for the output on BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3 and BBC4. My technical skills were developed pioneering the use of digital broadcasting hardware and software in radio studios. RCS Master Control, BCX and Myriad. In the early days it was so expensive, now everyone can have fun with music.
An incredible highlight on the journey was a night with Robbie Vincent in Victoria, London. Appearances with Ray Gaskins and JTQ on a Channel Ferry to St Malo are etched into an extraordinary story.
After many years on FM, DAB, Sky and Online Radio the experience has grown. Millennium/Time/RTM 103.8, Chocolate Radio, The Jazz UK, Crackers Radio, SoulBeat, JFSR, Joy Radio, The Soul Of Grenada/London, Solar Radio, Starpoint, The Lounge, Diamond Groove on DAB in Oxford, Hull and Exeter.
Soul International now brings the sound to Soul City Radio.
I followed in my brother's footsteps by gigging in the clubs of Peterborough in the 1990s and then followed on into the soul and funk scene around Cambridgeshire. I did two seasons abroad including Ibiza and Southern France, DJing around the UK in the last 20 years and finally joining Internet Radio in 2019. I adore many different genres of music depending on my mood. In recent years I have followed the Neo Soul/alternative R&B scene. Music is my peace and inner strength. I love finding and promoting the music of independent artists and hope I can help their careers progress.
I guess it all started for me, with the explosion of the Brit Funk scene in the early 80s, a cool mixture of jazz, deep bass and grooves, a slightly underground, raw feel to it. This great music would have me spending my cash on vinyls at the local record store.
The clubs would follow, Cinderella's, Tiffany's, Ronnie Scott's, the many soul playing pubs in and around London and the South East. Live gigs, the Soul Weekenders, Caister, Baltic, listening to pirate radio, owning my own bar, all bought me to DJ. I have been lucky enough and privileged to have played at festivals around the country, clubs, pubs river boats and radio stations, working with great DJs along the way.
Super pleased to be part of the Soul City Radio Family and to be able to bring you all that music that I have soaked up along my journey. Music is for sharing and brings people together from all parts of the world and long may that continue.
Established in February 2015, I Got Soul was started at the Licked Bar, Farnham by me as a monthly last Saturday of the month over 30s Soul event. Being very much a Boogie boy who travelled all over the towns in the South, I wanted to bring a wider range of Soul back to an area that was very much a part of the UK Soul scene back in the day. Going forward, I Got Soul is now resident at the Apres Night Club, Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell where we have our third Friday of the month residency. I Got Soul have booked the finest US & UK Artists and DJ celebrities to perform such as Jean Carn, Omar, Jazzie B, So Solid Crew, Luck & Neat, Spoony, David Rodigan, Trevor Nelson and Norman Jay to name a few. We also have Soul tributes and Soul Boat events, and for those who like UKG we have those nights covered too along with UKG Boat Parties.
I am looking forward to working with the Team here on Soul City Radio.
My career as a DJ and presenter started in the eighties and growing up in South London I had the opportunity of listening to some great pirate and radio stations including Horizon, Kiss and Capital Radio London. I also visited some great clubs too, the likes of the Lyceum, 100 Club, Wag, Crackers and many more too numerous to mention.
My first venture into internet radio began with JFSR and Crackers Radio and learning all about radio with the legendary George Power, my mentor.
My music tastes vary from reggae to soul, all genres actually including jazz-funk.
Hopefully you can join me on Soul City Radio with my Essential Rhythms show.
I started listening to soul music back when I was 14 (1970) Motown and Philly and I started DJing with a friend in the 70s and 80s.
I got married and had a family and after 22 years we split up, so I started going to gigs again and that's when I started to dig deeper into Soul and really look for new underplayed tracks. I was fed up of hearing the same stuff and wanted to share my love on the radio (Mixcloud) and after 170+ (vinyl only) shows I'm still going strong.
Now it's time to move on and share my love here on Soul City Radio. I'm just very passionate about sharing my music.
Scottish Soul girl that loves, loves, loves her music. I have been blessed to come from a soul loving family so my early memories of dancing in the living room aged 11 with mum, dad and 3 older brothers to the likes of George Benson, Luther Vandross, Maze, EW&F and Soul Train on Friday nights dancing round the telly. My first concert at 13 was George Benson where we met him back stage.
I’ve always been a singer and dancer but unfortunately got struck with COVID in October 2021 and was hospitalised for 3 months. I started DJing 20 months ago when in recovery. I was left with fibrosis in my lung therefore not able to sing and dance the way I used to. I started doing mixes on Virtual DJ and uploading to Mixcloud where Nigel Fox was listening and agreed to feature my work on his show that everyone loved. Thanks to Nigel taking a chance on me, he offered me my own show which I was blown away by. I became an overnight DJ/presenter doing a weekly show ever since and loving every minute.
Soooo happy to still be involved in music and love sharing my knowledge of all things soul.
Banksy here. I'm in n my 50th plus year of being a DJ/presenter (where did those years go?) I have worked in clubs and radio for most of those years in this country and abroad. I like most types of music but specialise in 60's/70'/80's soul, jazz-funk, Motown and northern soul. Expect to hear that tune you may have forgotten.
I started my DJ career as a dancer, for one of the big DJs in Kent. One night he was called up to the manger's office and he asked me to put on a few records while he was gone. He was gone quite some time, so I started playing the tunes that I would dance to. A doorman came up to me and asked me to announce for a vehicle to be moved. I was petrified but found it was a good feeling. By the time the DJ had come back, I had the dancefloor packed. He asked me if I fancied being his warm up DJ every week after that.
I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and carried on warming up for some of the big DJs on the scene. I worked on the Kent Soul Festival and a Pirate radio station. I then started putting on my own nights and promotions, bringing in artists that were going to be the next big thing, as well as established artists. I soon found myself working in big clubs in Kent and London and ended up travelling around the UK holding residencies in Guernsey and Nottingham. I fell in love with the Midlands and soon established myself in the Midlands and moved up there. My love of the music has always been my driving force. I have worked commercial nights as well as specialist nights. I grew up on the Jazz-Funk and
soul scene and when I went back on radio I went back to my roots.
I started DJing with my brother helping him on the road when I was 12. In 1979 I decided I wanted to DJ on my own and it just went on from there, playing jazz-funk, soul, disco, playing at various youth clubs and then when I was old enough into pubs, nightclubs. I then met a DJ from London Weekend Radio and used to do mixes for him and just continued with that formula to date. My show on Soul City Radio will play all those choons from back in the day, mostly from my vinyl collection. Please join me and take a trip down memory lane.
Growing up, I always remember my parents playing the likes of Lou Rawls, Barry White, The Fatback Band and Diana Ross to name but a few. My love of soul music grew from there and has flourished into what it is today.
Growing up on the south coast, we were not blessed with the best of clubs. There were a group of us that would go to wine bars and clubs to see our friends DJ at weekends. One place we often frequented was Scandals wine bar in Southsea.
I found myself in this fantastic position of being on the radio after answering a post on social media from the late, great Les Adams. We spoke, met up, I was told I had a great face for radio and as they say, the rest is history! Les trained me to become a radio presenter and DJ. I will never forget what he installed into me - life is an education and everyday is a school day. Music is the same, I love to play music that some listeners may or may not have heard before. Music is a journey that I really enjoy taking listeners on. Since starting out, I have worked on a couple of radio stations, played at multiple events, in the UK and abroad, in clubs, boats and bars.
Now is time to be involved in a new station, working together with some really good friends and people, who share the same passion and love of music.
I started DJing at the age of 15, playing at the local youth club. This led to other opportunities locally, including various residencies (too many to mention) and playing at large corporate events. It also led to my first taste of pirate radio with People's Choice on the FM band and a spell as Programme Controller for Ebba FM. Since then I have worked on a number of the biggest soul stations including Solar and Starpoint. I have played out abroad alongside artists such as Jean Carn, Kathy Sledge and my hero, Greg Edwards. I've also played at and am a regular DJ at the Surrey Soul Train weekenders. My love of music has been with me all of my life from, soul, Brit funk, reggae and jazz - I really love anything with a beat!
Doing radio is a huge part of my life, the reward being putting some happiness into other people's days. I am fortunate enough to have a large following, something that I never take for granted and I am really looking forward to continuing my radio journey here with you on Soul City Radio.
Being the youngest of ten, I grew up listening to a wide range of music. However, my love of soul music started in my early teens (a long time ago now!) when I was listening to pirate stations and DJing at friends parties. In my late teens, I started to DJ on the Old Kent Road which had a lively array of bars and clubs at the time. In my early twenties some of the DJs I knew had set up pirate stations and I was fortunate enough to be invited to play on a few.
I guess my big break came when I was asked to DJ on Kiss FM where I presented weekend breakfast for the station. In 2011, I moved to Solar Radio which resulted in me presenting the weekday breakfast show for 11 years and then a Sunday afternoon show too. Whilst this was fantastic time for me, I knew that I wanted to open up other radio experiences, including the behind the scenes stuff that is so important to keeping a station on air. Here today, I find myself doing just that in an exciting new venture with Soul City Radio.
A lover of all things soulful, I have been collecting and playing rare groove, boogie and funky vibes all my life. A love that was born out of the original pirate stations back in the day. Today I have a weekend residency at the Lockside Bar in Camden Town, London, where we get to lay down the music live. My radio show broadcasts are always well supported by a knowledgeable audience, many of who have become good friends over the years.
I loved listening to the likes of DJs like Greg Edwards on a Friday evening at The Best Disco in Town at the Lyceum Ballroom, London in the 1980s as well as tuning into the local pirate radio stations, JFM, Horizon and LWR. Around this time I started building my vinyl collection and began to DJ in bars and clubs around East London. I loved going to concerts regularly seeing the likes of Cameo, Slave, Loose Ends and Edwin Starr to name a few.
I love playing music that brings back memories of the 1970s and 80s which, in my opinion, was the greatest period for the soul scene. I have been fortunate to co-host on a few radio stations over the past few years with some amazing DJs as well as presenting my own shows on two radio stations, playing 70s and 80s soul, disco and funk.
My DJ career started in 1988, initially playing in clubs in my home town of Luton. I then progressed to having various residencies throughout the UK.
I run my own live ‘Grooves’ events at local venues in and around Luton and Dunstable, which have a regular and ever growing following. I also have a successful mobile disco business.
My DJ style is a mix of personality and seamless mixing of music. I play a variety of music, both new and classic favourites and am always searching for the next soul ‘anthem’.
I first started playing music gigs when I was 17 in Putney bars and the Stoned Crow in Streatham (good days). I was resident DJ in Ollie’s bar in Ascot for 11 years, not only in the bar but also in the function room where we had lots of big acts perform including Roy Ayres, The Crusaders, Light of the World, the Average White Band.
My radio career started at Quest FM in London in 1983. From there I joined JCR Radio then Green Apple Radio and finally Point Blank FM where I presented a Saturday show for over 21 years. Nowadays, you can find me at Salou Soul, Bee Soulful soul nights and various guest spots including the legendary Boating Club and Soul Shack. You can also find me here on Soul City Radio every Saturday afternoon with the Soulful Saturday show.
My love for music started in the late 1970s. It wasn't too long before I had an impressive record collection and I started to DJ. I now enjoy sharing my love of good soul music to the world via my radio shows. Join me each and every Sunday afternoon for your weekly dose of The Soul Junction.
I was brought up in Acton, West London in the late Sixties and early Seventies, which is where I fell in love with Soul and Reggae music. I was heavily influenced by radio presenters like Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards and David Rodigan. My love of music resulted in me becoming a mobile DJ at the age of 21.
I am a relatively new radio presenter with just over 18 months radio presenting experience. I love listener interaction and am looking forward to presenting to you on Soul City Radio.
I honed my DJ skills performing in local London pubs, moving on to play in London west end nightclubs: Muppets, Tingles - The Roof Garden Kensington, The Bird's Nest, Scamps Wine Bar in Fulham and South London's Bon Bonnie.
I trained as a radio presenter on Radio Jackie, then did a regular slot on London's premier Soul station ‘Horizon Radio’ in the 1980s.
On top of my years of experience, I advanced my skills at the London Sound Academy (LSA), with training approved by Pioneer.
My passion for great music is clear, whether I’m playing at a private party, public events, nightclubs or presenting radio shows. I’ve produced weekly Soul and House shows on well-known soul stations over the last 6 years.
I am also proud to be one of the Margate Soul Festival DJs, playing every year.
My interest in Soul music began in the very early seventies and this always was Modern Soul, Sublime and Steppers and Rare Groove. I have been broadcasting on various Radio Stations since 2014.
Being a Northern lad gave me access to various venues to play my love of Modern Soul although these days I mainly can be heard on the airwaves.
I'm looking forward to being part of the team in this exciting venture in radio broadcasting here on Soul City Radio.
It was 1983 when I discovered my love for soul music. I always knew my taste was a little different from most of my friends who enjoyed pop music. I moved abroad for a short time in 1984/5 where I fell in with a group of friends who worked on a radio station. From that point, being in that environment sparked my interest in radio broadcasting.
On my return to the UK, life took a different path but my passion for soul music remained strong. So, six years ago I turned my hands to the decks and it reignited that spark for radio broadcasting again. I am overjoyed to be part of Soul City Radio. Why don't you come and join me in The Soul Lounge.
My passion for music spans over 50 years, beginning with being a young teenager running to the local record shop in North London spending my apprentice hairdressers wages on the latest soul releases. I am still as passionate today, trawling the new releases and constructing both recorded sessions and live DJ sets. My radio presenting career began in the North East over 18 years ago, initially being invited as a guest on NE1 FM radio, after which I enjoyed presenting regular specialist shows on Starpoint, Sunrise, Delite, Solar and recently Sonic Stream radio. I would describe my show as a ‘mixed bag’ consisting of mainly soul (largely new, some old), with a sprinkling of jazz, reggae, lovers rock and house.
I am a regular DJ at GYSW, Summer Solstice, Laurels, Whitley Bay Carnival and Mouth of the Tyne Festival.
I grew up in South West London and now reside in the beautiful Surrey Hills. The London pirate soul stations of the early and mid-eighties were where I found my love for soul and jazz funk music. Listening to the likes of JFM, Horizon and LWR was my passion.
My first venture into radio broadcasting was in June 2014 with a community radio station in Leatherhead, Surrey… and I still volunteer there now!
I’ll be presenting ‘It’s All About The Music’ on Soul City Radio, from 5pm to 7pm every Sunday. The music policy will simply be the best in disco, jazz funk, soul and house, both new and old. If it has a good bassline, it’ll probably be on my playlist.
Outside of Soul music, my interests are many and varied. I love sport and although my competitive Triathlon days are probably behind me, you can still find me out on the bike, running or swimming in the lake!
As a twelve year old, I started listening to Atlantic Stax and Motown. In the early Seventies, along came Northern Soul and I have been hooked ever since.
I am looking forward to sharing my passion and knowledge for Northern Soul with you here, on Soul City Radio.
My mum. That’s where my love of soul music started. Way back to early childhood, listening to The Drifters, Gladys Knight, The Stylistics and The Four Tops on the living room stereo. The crackle of the needle on the rotating vinyl disc and then there was magic! Like so many of us, those early childhood sounds are the ones that I still love today and without doubt, cemented my love of the genre. Mum also provided my first experience of live music when she took me, aged 12, to see Johnny Mathis at the Dominion Theatre. That gentle, velvet voice…simply amazing.
It’s completely impossible to name my favourite soul song. I’ve tried so many times and I just can’t do it! The best I can do is share some of my favourite artists who include, Randy Brown, Anita Baker, The Temptations, Johnny Bristol, Gladys Knight, Rockie Robins and of course, the boss himself, Luther Vandross. George Benson, Deniece Williams, The Whispers… I could go on and on. Meaningful lyrics a rhythm that compel you to dance. What’s not to like?
I can’t imagine me without soul music. That said, anyone who knows me will also know, I do love a bit of disco too! I also like to keep up with the latest releases. There are some fabulous new tracks around that keep the genre growing for the current and future soul lovers out there.
Still relatively new to radio presenting, an exciting new opportunity, to be part Soul City Radio sharing some great music with the listeners on the second Sunday of each month. Soul Fine, that’s the name of the show and that’s the aim. Fine soul music for fine soul people.
I was born in the mid sixties and like the rest of my generation I was lucky to grow up with an amazing variety of music during my formative years, from rock and punk through to soul and jazz funk.
As a teenager in the early eighties I discovered the music played by the great presenters such as Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards and Froggy. I got my first set of decks in 1986 and played at parties around the Kent and Sussex area as well as a regular slot at Queensway Ice Skating Club where there was an audience who appreciated the soul music of the time. Driving home after those gigs I was enthralled by the plethora of weekend pirate stations such as LWR, TKO and Solar playing music that didn’t get played anywhere else. As I sped down the A20 in my Cortina I was always disappointed as the reception faded away and I had to go back to my cassettes!
I’ve worked as an engineer ‘behind the scenes’ in radio for much of my life and I have also presented on many temporary ‘Restricted Service Licence’ radio stations in my area so after a recent career change I’m really looking forward to moving my broadcasting experience forward by sharing my love of jazz and jazz influenced music with the discerning audience at Soul City Radio and working alongside the other knowledgeable presenters on the team of what is a fast growing radio station.
I have always loved music and all kinds of music but my love of soul, R&B and jazz funk came as a result of listening to Robbie Vincent on Radio London in the 70s.
With this in mind, I started DJing on Hospital Radio in Harlow in 1978 and was also a youth club DJ moving into night club work throughout Herts and Essex and North London through the 1980s. If I wasn’t playing music I would visit the clubs of the time, venues like The Lacy Lady and The Goldmine watching Froggy and Chris Hill do their thing. Flicks in Dartford on a Friday would see Robbie Vincent and Jeff Young and learning about what the Soul scene was doing and buying the tunes they would play. This included regular trips to City Sounds in Holborn, where I grew my vinyl collection.
I look forward to sharing the music of that era on my show here on Soul City Radio.
Born and raised in the UK with 7 siblings to Jamaican settlers. I was born with black music in my veins. Raised in a small town, my parent fully integrated into British society but would always play the music of the Caribbean and black America as I was growing up. Blues parties were definitely a feature in our household, Through my early childhood, my mother brought records regularly, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Motown, Spencer Davis, Pat Kelly, Johnny Nash and Marcia Griffiths to name a few.
As a teenager Northern Soul came along and I found a place where I could fit in! Since the early 70s I have been buying/collecting the music of black America. I got the opportunity to play records at our school lunchtime discos, then youth clubs and that led to playing in soul venues in England, Scotland and the occasionally in Europe.
My first love is 60’s soul music but I certainly am not limited to that. I have been privileged enough to have presented radio shows for over 20 years on various networks. I love soul music for the soulful. The Sound Of Soul Show will be entertaining, enjoyable and educational.
Please join me, George Rowe, for my regular show, Soul Heaven. I am so excited to join the station which is full of great presenters with so much musical knowledge.
I have been working in the radio industry for the last fifteen years, presenting various shows on a range of stations. I play everything soul...jazz, funk, rare groove, soulful house, neo-soul, reggae and much more.
I will be bringing beats to the people's feet whilst bringing soul to their minds and of course, music to their ears.
Music has been a huge part of my life, Mum said "I danced before I could walk ".
Growing up in Brighton, we had such a diverse music scene,. Aged 8 I bought my first 7" record and I was very lucky to have my own radiogram to play it on. I started DJing for friends and family when I was 16, and from there the DJ skills grew, being able to mix and blend have been one of my biggest achievements.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be involved with radio broadcast and of course the DJing and my late hubby James always encouraged me to follow my dream. In 2016 I was offered a slot on Soul Legends Radio and from there I moved to Zero Radio (Essex), 1BTN Radio (Local DAB station), Stomp Radio and now to Soul City Radio and I'm so looking forward to helping grow an up-and-coming station.
I've been very honoured to play in some amazing places and towns across the world and hold some fantastic residencies in Sussex too.
I`ve DJd in Lanzarote, Corfu, Barbados, Played and Margate Soul Festival, Summer Soulstice and Brighton Soul Weekender.
I`ve held residencies at The Seven Stars, The Grand Central, The Prestonville and Casablancas in Brighton, also the Old Market in Hastings Old Town.
Catch me here on Soul City Radio with my crazy Brighton Blends Shows, With a cocktail of features including, anything goes, Back-2-Bangers, the original Cloakroom Queue selection, timeless classics and a diddy mix bit.
Come a take a shot with the Belle.
The story begins in 1979 when I bought my first bit of equipment, FAL decks and some homemade speakers (so heavy!) I then started DJing in pubs and wine bars and this carried through to when I had the chance to DJ in a bar in Tenerife. My DJing then stopped for a couple of years due to the theft of my vinyl but soul music was my in my blood and so I carried on buying vinyl and CDs to add to my collection. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012/13 and then decided to raise money for various cancer charities doing soul functions at local venues which were always a great success.
My passion for soul will never die, it's in my DNA. I'm looking forward to sharing that passion with you here on Soul City Radio.
I am an avid vinyl collector from Budapest. My now huge collection of soul, funk and rarities form the playlist for the Soul Session, which I present on Radio Cafe in Budapest. The Soul Session is Hungary's one and only soul radio show and has been running for over 15 years, accumulating over 600 live shows.
As part of Soul Session, I have had the pleasure of interviewing many of the greatest US soul stars of the 1970s and 80s including, Rockie Robbins, Garfield Flemming, Marlena Shaw, Norman Connors, Narada Michael Walden and Jean Carn. More recently, I have interviewed Cornell CC Carter, Preston Glass and Carmy Love.
I am looking forward to your company on Soul City Radio UK.
Please visit the Soul Session You Tube channel for the latest shows and updates:
I was born in Southport, the home of one of the best soul music weekenders. This inspired me and from an early age and I have been collecting soul music since the early 80s. Being an avid listener to soul radio shows influenced me massively and shaped my love of 70s/80s Modern Soul, Rare Groove, 2-Step and 80s/90s/00s contemporary/Independent smooth grooves.
The passion for this type of music is still present today and influences me in the music I play. I am a regular resident at local soul gigs and soul weekender gigs. I have been around radio in some format since the late 80s and in the last decade I have had the pleasure of presenting my own shows. If you love your sophisticated, mellow, mid-tempo grooves, classic, rare and underplayed music from these beautiful music genres, then you can catch me here on Soul City Radio.
I was born in East London and grew up on the Thames Riviera otherwise known as Canvey Island! I was lucky to be exposed to all things soulful and jazzy at a very young age, as from the age of 15 (being a tall, rugby playing type) I was a regular at Canvey’s Gold Mine hosted by the legendary DJ Chris Hill aided by Tom Holland, Jeff Young, Froggy, Bob Jones and others. From that the passion was born and my first Caister experience followed soon after.
I started DJing in 1981 by accident at Canvey’s Monico Club (CB Radio night as we couldn’t afford a proper DJ!) and as well as mobile work, I soon progressed to Essex pubs, clubs and more over the next 20-years. Highlights include Shades Nightclub Canvey (with Greg Edwards), Kings Club Canvey, The Old Windmill Hanningfield (with Gary Dennis), The Sam Lords (Benfleet), Turtle Bay (Southend) and Peers Nightclub (with Dr Bob Jones) on Southend seafront.
After a lengthy break, I was enticed into radio in 2009 and the first incarnation of my “Saturday Soulmine” show was born on the newly-formed Zero Radio. I also started a club night called “Soul by the Jetty” (nod to Canvey’s finest band Dr Feelgood) in the same year and was then lucky enough to win the ‘Soul Survivors’ magazine’s ‘Best UK Soul Club outside London’ continuously between 2011 and 2019. Regular DJ guests included Jeff Young, Paul Clark, Fitzroy, Neville, Les Knott, Gary Dennis, Ginger Tony and most of the then Caister DJ’s on rotation. The award-winning “Jetty” returns occasionally post-pandemic so listen out for updates!
I joined the Caister DJ team in 2009 (led by the Guv'nor Chris Hill), starting on radio then moving into different rooms and the BBQ, finally progressing to peak time main room sets after Chris retired. I also managed to indulge musically with specialist sets such as, ‘Bongo Beats’, ‘Boogaloo Beats’, ‘Jazz Juice’, ‘The Big Bad Bald B-Boyz’ and many more right up until the weekender’s sad demise in 2020. As well as Caister; I was a regular at Margate Soul Weekend (even hosting and running the main Piazza stage for a number of years) Kent Soul Sessions, Essex Funkers, Soul Reunited, Soul Fiesta, Killer Soul, Papillion Reunion, Brighton Beach Party and many more.
I now appear occasionally at selected gigs including ‘The Jetty’, plus seasonal monthly Sunday afternoon free Jazz Funk & Soul sessions on Canvey Island with Dave Mascall’s Acid Lounge band, various soul boats and more. I look forward to working with my Soul City Radio colleagues!
Music wise, as well as Soul, I love Nu-Jazz, Trip Hop, Soulful & Afro House, Cuban & Latin, early-80’s grooves, Brit Funk, Blue Note, 60’s R&B and selected mayhem tunes so expect an upfront, eclectic and occasionally left-field selection for The Saturday Soulmine!
Hope to have the pleasure of your company LIVE every Saturday 10am-12pm (UK time).
I started DJing at the young age of 16. A family friend was the DJ at the Café Royal on Regent Street and I went along one evening. I was hooked and never looked back. I still enjoy entertaining today as I did when I started all those years ago.
I was the DJ for 9 years at Planet Hollywood in Leicester Square and Haymarket, occasionally sent to their Paris branch on Avenue des Champs-Elysees & Disneyland Paris. I also had a 9-year spot at Dover St Restaurant & Bar in Mayfair as DJ and Sound Technician, working with some great tribute bands and an opportunity to work with 80s Soul Diva, Jackie Graham. With many years of experience, it’s not about what the DJ likes playing, it’s about playing the tunes that keep the dance floor rocking and everyone happy. I play for the crowd and not myself.
In November 2024, I had the pleasure of DJing abroad and I spin the tunes for the “Surrey Soul Train” events. I played at Chichester Soul weekender in February 2024.
I’ve been a mobile, club, bar, corporate and karaoke DJ for many years now working in all sorts of venues all around the UK and Europe. I had a few spots on Cruise ships along the Adriatic and Med and am now looking forward to entertaining you on Soul City Radio.
From being a schoolboy and spending almost every penny I had in Black Wax Records in Streatham, looking to buy the latest 7 inch import singles to now, soul music has always been my passion.
From the early days of doing mobile discos, weddings, birthdays, youth and social clubs, to playing some of the top nightclubs in London, and despite hanging the headphones up on a few occasions, the passion has always been there.
All these years later and to now have the opportunity to play the music I love, for people who love the music, it doesn’t get much better than that!
Known as GT, I've been DJing since I was a teenager and began by playing at house parties with an old 70s twin deck consul made of wood. I thoroughly enjoyed what I was doing so saved up and bought myself some new equipment, this led me to mobile DJing. During this time I played at clubs and bars and always loved to mix. I was a big fan of DMC and loved listening to Les Adams, Dakyne and others seemlessly mixing tracks together.
About 7 years ago I turned my hand to broadcasting and thanks to Nigel Fox setting me up I was ready to broadcast live. From the word go I loved it. The soul music umbrella is massive and I find it fascinating exploring new and old tunes which I love to share with the listener.
I can't remember ever being without music in my life, from youth club, working (school holidays) in Spanish City fairground Whitley Bay, then socialising in clubs in the North East region. Fashion and music went hand in hand back in the 70's/80's so I lived through some of the best music/fashion explosions which fuelled my passion, suedehead, northern soul, disco, funk, punk, new romantic and so on. I remember Andrea (we met in Coolbury Club, Tottenham in 80s) being dumfounded that someone from "Up Norf" had even heard of Bootsy Collins and Parliament, never mind had their albums !!
I am still collecting music in any format as long as it is good (in my opinion). I have been involved with several radio stations in the past mainly offering technical support and 'filling in' presenting the odd show when requested. I like music from all eras, from early R&B all the way to Soulful House, Latin, Afrobeat, anything that makes me move! Weekenders, playing at local events and going to see live music are still a large part of my life so I can stay fresh and up to date.
Remember "You don't stop because you get old, you get old because you stop".
See you on a dance floor !!
I started my DJ journey doing school discos at a young age and then discovered hospital radio which got me hooked onto doing live shows on radio.
I have grown up with the soul scene and soul music has always been my first love. I enjoy doing soul events around London and the home counties.
I am now looking forward to continuing my love of soul music with the Soul City Radio listeners.
I grew up in Liverpool, gigging with many bands, before moving to the big smoke. I then started gigging solo, including guest spots with Roger Odell's Jazz Trio of Shakatak fame.
I fell into broadcasting after guesting with Dennis O'Brien on another station. From then I was well and truly bitten by the radio bug. My interests are , Soul, Jazz and Funk and talking!! A show on Soul City Radio is the perfect opportunity to enjoy all three! Catch you soon, Jeannie.
I had my first taste of Northern Soul as an 11-year-old in 1976 and the first school summer disco. I started hearing more from the guys a year or two older than me in the form of cassette tapes and never looked back. Starting with the local soul nights and all-dayers and then as the I got old enough, I started going to all-nighters which included Leicester Oddfellows, Fleet, Bradford and of course Rotherham and any others I could attend. Later came the 100 Club and the real game changer (Top of the world – Stafford).
I bought my first 45 at the age of 12 and have been searching, buying and listening ever since. Finding new sounds across the soul scene genre has always been a passion and though my first love will always a good Northern Soul record, I collect soul music from the 60s to today. I have DJd across the UK and Europe over the year, but my passion has always been focused on collecting first and foremost.
In recent years I have been selling Soul 45s and LPs with Manfromsoul Rare Vinyl Records and later started my own independent record label in Soul Direction Records. Both go from strength to strength and hopefully will continue to spread this great music well into the future.
I have been in and around the UK Soul and Jazz Funk scene for many years. My early musical career was as a session musician often to be found in the backing bands for many visiting American Soul artists including Junior Walker, Jean Carn, Sister Sledge and many others.
In recent years I have been been raising my profile within the Jazz/Funk/Soul community with the original “ACID LOUNGE” project with 6 albums and numerous single releases to date, many achieving high positions in the UK Soul Chart and various others.
More recently, I have been turning my hand to a bit of DJing and have been presenting my own radio show. I have now joined you here at Soul City Radio where I will continues to share my love of Classic Soul, Jazz Funk, Laid back grooves, Funky Fusion and Soulful House along with all the best new releases.
